Oral Health and Wellness Questions
How often should I see the dentist for a checkup and cleaning?
Most patients do best with a checkup and professional cleaning every six months. These visits remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing can’t reach, and they let our dental care team catch cavities, gum problems, and other concerns early, when they’re small and easy to treat. Some patients benefit from more frequent visits, especially those with a history of gum disease, diabetes, or a high risk of cavities. We’ll recommend a schedule that fits your needs. How does my oral health affect the rest of my body?
What are the signs of gum disease, and can it be treated?
Common warning signs include bleeding gums when you brush or floss, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loose-feeling teeth. Gum disease often causes no pain early on, so regular exams matter. The good news: early gum disease can usually be reversed with professional cleanings and better home care. For more advanced cases, Heritage Dental offers LANAP® laser gum therapy, a less invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery with a quicker recovery. Learn more about gum disease treatment.
Why is an oral cancer screening part of my dental visit?
Oral cancer is most treatable when it’s found early, but early signs can be easy to miss. We use OralID™, a fluorescence-based screening tool that helps identify cancer, precancer, and other abnormal tissue earlier. The screening is quick, painless, and takes about five minutes. Tell us if you notice a sore that won’t heal, a lump, a rough patch, or a red or white spot in your mouth. Learn more about our dental technology.
When should my child first see a dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. Early visits help us spot problems, guide healthy habits, and help your child feel comfortable at the dentist. Our gentle team welcomes kids of all ages, and tools like DentalVibe® make numbing more comfortable for young patients. Learn more about our dental care for kids.
Questions About Our Dental Services
What dental services do you offer?
Heritage Dental in Katy offers complete family care. Our services include preventive care like cleanings, exams, and custom nightguards; restorative dentistry, including crowns, bridges, root canals, dentures, and dental implants; and cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening. We also offer braces, Invisalign®, and clear aligner therapy, plus kids’ dentistry, sedation, and emergency care. Keeping more services in-house means fewer referrals and less running around for you.
What should I do if I have a dental emergency?
Contact our Katy dental office right away. Dental emergencies include severe toothaches, a cracked or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, swelling, or a mouth injury. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, rinse it gently, and keep it moist in milk until you reach us. Fast treatment gives you the best chance of saving the tooth. If you have severe facial swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room. Learn more about emergency dental care.
I’m nervous about going to the dentist. How can you help?
Our team takes dental anxiety seriously. We start by listening, explaining each step, and letting you set the pace. DentalVibe® uses gentle vibration to make injections far more comfortable, and our private treatment rooms have TVs to help you relax. For patients who need extra help, we offer conscious sedation options. Ask us which option is right for you.
What are my options for replacing missing teeth?
Replacing missing teeth protects your bite, your jawbone, and your confidence. Depending on your needs, Dr. Nguyen may recommend a dental implant, which replaces the tooth root for a stable, natural-feeling result; a bridge, which anchors a replacement tooth to neighboring teeth; or dentures for several or all missing teeth. We’ll walk you through the pros, cons, and cost of each option.
